  2. Tovie,

The current version just changes the countdown numbers to display "done" when the event has come and passed. I could add a sound, but the sound will only be heard if Ticker is running when the event countdown reaches zero.

Once Apple re-introduces the notification system I could possibly have a sound play event when not using Ticker, we will have to wait and see on this one.

    Thanks for the feedback

Hello there. I'm just beginning to try out your application and would like to check something I'm maybe missing and suggest something related to Tovie's post.

I've made 3 or 4 entries so far, some birthdays etc, all annually recurring. I made a mistake and entered them all as 2008, and instead of a time, Ticker displayed 'done' against each one. I've corrected the entries to 2009. But what happens when these anniversaries come round? Does Ticker display 'done' again or start to count down the next anniversary (which is what I want, I don't want to have to re-set the timer for each birthday each year!?

I think the application would be much more useful if it could ring an alarm, send a message or other reminder as a pre-determined interval BEFORE the event as a reminder. Say a week or two to remember to buy and post the present, then the day before to remember to phone up! Is this possible?

Thanks for your hard work guys, this looks promising!

    Cheers

  4. Jon,

Those dates will show done once the event comes and passes. I have thought about adding a way to allow events to repeat, I just have not decided on how much granularity to allow. Do I allow repeat intervals; of yearly, monthly, weekly, daily, hourly etc? The finer the control the more complex the interface becomes, I believe in very simple design, just enough to get the job done.

I would love to hear your thoughts on the granularity of the repeat feature.

As for the alarm and sending a message, with the current SDK I can only do these things when the Ticker app is running, which is really not that useful for sending the message. When Apple does allow for doing these things outside of when the app is running, they will be added some way.

thank you for the purchase and valuable feedback

Hi Sean. Thanks for your response.

I do feel quite strongly that your application should have a 'repeat' function to make it more useful, but I take your point on keeping things simple. I suppose we need to consider how an application such as this can mesh with the Calendar and not repeat functions. My view is that I will use Ticker to allow me to have a clear OVERVIEW of key repeating or longer term dates that is not possible with the Calendar because of the clutter of other appointments plus the fact that Calendar only gives a monthly overview. I realise that I can set up repeating yearly appointments with alarms on a distinct calendar within iCal, but I don't feel I have a good overview to help me plan well ahead.

The types of repeating events I imagine I'll use Ticker for are definitely yearly, such as birthdays and anniversaries, tax return dates, health checkups, school term starts, even football season starts! I will also put non repeating dates in there like holiday start dates. All these events need an element of pre-planning of several weeks, hence the need for this overview.

I might even put a monthly 'pay bills' or 'submit expenses' reminder into Ticker, but to be honest this may well go into iCal/Calendar. Anything more frequent such as various weekly/2weekly meeting schedules, of which I have dozens, WOULD NOT go into Ticker, but occur in iCal to keep Ticker clean and useful.

I understand fully what you are saying with regard to the Apple SDK's lack of 'background' or 'notification' ability just now. I hope that comes.

But now that I've sorted out in my head my own split of use between Calendar and Ticker, I'm less concerned about the Alarm request, though it would be useful. It's this OVERVIEW function that I see as being most useful property of Ticker.

Having said that, would it be possible to have Ticker also post a diary event in the Calendar automatically? Maybe with a pre-determined reminder timing. Is that also prevented by the SDK?

Anyway, keep up the good work.

    Cheers,

  7. Jon,

Thank you for the detailed look of how you plan to/use Ticker, that information is very useful. I will probably go with the following repeat options; none, yearly and monthly.

As for the integration with the Calendar program, I am not sure how much if any access I have to the Calendar with the SDK. I know I can easily access items in the Address Book but I don't recall seeing anything in the developer documentation pertaining to the Calendar. I will have to give it more research, I really hope I can find a way to tie the two together somehow.

    Thanks again for the feedback
