ticker request list

Thanks for making Ticker. I've used TymeLynz and Countdown, and Ticker is definitely the most attractive app. Elegant interface and easy to use. Here's my request list. Some of it echos what others have said. I'm just adding my vote.

    1) Time since: Ability to have time since events that count up instead of down. Like you can in TymeLynz and Countdown.

    2) Custom time display: Ability to specify custom time display formats. What I want is functionality similar to TymeLynz, which allows you to turn selectively on/off years, weeks, days, hours, minutes, and seconds on a per item basis.

    3) More icons: I too want more icons to choose from.

    4) Color labels: Ability to assign a background color to items. Similar to Finder labels and iCal calendar colors, so you can give favorite events a different color.

    5) Contacts import: Ability to selectively import dates from your Contacts database, and automatically create Ticker items based on those dates.

    6) Recurring events: Ability to setup repeating entries for annual, monthly, weekly, etc. events.

    7) Photo icons: Ability to pick a photo from your photo library and assign it to a ticker item. Something similar to the add photo feature in MidCentury Software's app Shopper.

    8) Categories: Ability to assign categories to items. Would be nice if there was a picklist for birthday, anniversary, vacation, holiday, etc. And it would be nice if you could turn on and off sorting your Ticker list by category. Something similar to the sort list by category feature in MidCentury Software's app Shopper.

I have no connection to MidCentury. I just love how Shopper handles categories and photos, and I would like Ticker to have similar functionality. Thanks again for your work.

  2. dd101,

Thank you for the kind words, I strive to make my apps as simple as possible to use. I personally want to add and access things fast from my phone, anything more just seems like the wrong tool for the job.

    1) This feature does not seem useful to me. Can you provide a use case or a compelling reason to include it? I am willing to be persuaded by sound reasons.

    2) I thought about this ability, I may add it if I can come up with a clean way that does not clutter the interface.

    3) Will do

    4) Interesting...

    5) Already on my list

    6) Already done (will be in 1.1)

    7) Already on my list

    8) Again, if I can come up with a simple clean way.

    Thank you for the feedback

I sometimes put warm drinks in the freezer and want to know how long I have left them in for; I don't know how long they need to be in so a countdown timer doesn't make sense. I also have a toddler who takes naps; I want to know how long he has been sleeping for. If I'm cooking something and I'm not sure how long it needs to cook for, I count up instead of down. I often find myself taking too long to get ready to go somewhere. I've started adding an "Inert since..." count up timer when I get up in the morning, in an attempt to embarrass myself into moving faster.

That being said, I am happy to see you are resisting the temptation to just add all features with no regard for how well they work. Microsoft apps are what happens when you never say no to a feature. :)

    Hi Sean,

Re your question on #1, in no particular order here are some ways I would use Ticker to count up from a date:

    a) To know how much time has elapsed since a project start date. I would use this constantly as a quick reference tool for project work. Actually, it would be great if Ticker could calculate time-since events in weeks, days, and weekdays or business days.

    b) To tell how long it's been since I sent an invoice to a client. Some clients take awhile to pay and Ticker would be handy way to keep track of how much time (or days) have elapsed since I submitted that invoice.

    c) To enter my parent's anniversary date and instantly know how many years they've been married. So is this your 50th anniversary? Congratulations, you've been married 2600 weeks.

    d) To enter my niece's birthdate and see how many days, weeks or months old she is.

    e) To enter the dates my girlfriend wants me to remember. So the next time she says, do you know how long we've been going out or how long it's been since we took a vacation together, I can say - yes I do, it's here in Ticker.

  5. gopi & dd101,

Ok, I give in, you have some good uses.

I like gopi's 'Inert since...' idea, funny.

dd101 I really like point e), I will have to remember that one once I implement the feature.

With all this good feedback my feature list is getting quite large, will have to break it up into a few releases.

    Thank you

    Sean
